Yesterday morning it was so calm and quiet that I could hear the calls of crows coming from all directions. The ones I could see - sitting high up in the branches of a dead tree just south of the "new" pond - cried: caw caw caw caw. A second later I could hear the response from the northwest: caw caw caw caw. Then from the south, way south it seemed, and then directly north. The dead tree crows sang again, and from the east came a distant: caw caw caw.
This morning there were no crows exchanging messages and even if they had been, their calls would have been swept away by the strong wind before reaching my ears. Instead, a number of crows had taken to the air. High up, they seemed pushed along and harassed by the wind. Not so much flying as taking the wind for a ride, only beating their wings because that is what nature demanded they do.
