After about a week of sightings of the snowy-white (how do they keep so clean??) egret at the "pond" at the center of our southern pasture, its absence this morning left us feeling a little hollow. We'd grown accustomed to each other. Each morning as the four of us passed (from afar) the pond, we strained our necks to look at the egret. The egret would strain its neck to look at us. Assured we weren't going to get any closer, it would go back to its hunter's vigilance, slowly lifting one long leg and then the other as it moved deliberately along the edge of the water. Come to think of it, it could have been a white heron. It's all in the color of the legs. We politely stayed too far to take note. Either way, we miss our regal visitor.
