The horseflies of yesterday have vanished. In my imagination, their sudden appearance and disappearance is explained by migration: a hungry hoard moving south, stopping briefly to seek out fresh blood to fuel their travels. But horseflies do not migrate.
We have vultures in our skies today instead. They've been wheeling lazily in the currents for hours, just to the east of the house. When we walk down the drive we disturb those that have landed - on something that has passed on, I suppose. I caught a slight scent of decay as I walked down to the mailbox after lunch.
