On our way home from Tulsa, we decided to stop for a picnic lunch alongside Okmulgee Lake. We'd never been there, but had been curious about it. It was the perfect day for it: mild and not too warm; just the slightest of breezes, no crowds and no boats or other motorized contraptions on the water. We had the picnic area and a piece of the lake to ourselves.
The small town of Okmulgee wasn't quite as picturesque. Though not as depressed as some other Oklahoma towns we've seen, there are many empty storefronts and decaying buildings. It does look as if there is an effort to revitalize the main street through town as the road was torn up and closed off to traffic. We could see some buildings had been renovated. I hope this is the case. These small middle America towns are so important to our heritage and culture. Perhaps with the unrest in the major cities, people will move back into these abandoned sites.
