You can't see them in the photo. You'll have to imagine them, but trust me, the pastures are rich with melodious meadowlarks. When flushed they fly in short, choppy bursts and settle elsewhere as soon as possible. In the mornings, lone male meadowlarks sing from the uppermost branches of their favorite trees, yellow breasts catching and holding the gold of the sunrise. One proud fellow has claimed one of the big, round hay bales as his high perch. His lady love flits along the ground nearby.
The meadowlarks' tune is, truthfully, rather tuneless. Whistle-y, trilling, with undertones of melancholy, it has become for me a morning sound. A wide-open spaces, appealingly lonely, tall grass sound.
