The sky this afternoon looked weak and washed out, the barely-blue of well-worn jeans. Post nap, the dogs and I spent only as much time as we needed for our outdoor tasks: Willa tracking salamanders; Ikey rolling on the driveway rocks to scratch his back; me watering the herb boxes at the front of the house. No sign of the garter snake in the tadpole pool, but no sign of tadpoles either... Then we scurried back inside.
This morning I tied my apron strings, gathered the water bath canner and other tools, turned on a small fan, and fired up a long podcast to keep me company as I cooked and stirred and spooned hot ingredients into hot jars. On the menu today were bread-and-butter pickles and tomatillo salsa. I'm definitely on a roll, but that momentum may come to a screeching halt due to the disappearance of canning jars and lids at my local retailers. The time of year + anxiety about the future may account for the empty shelves. I will not be deterred. Marinara sauce will be made!
